Top 5 Reasons I Love Chicago In The Winter.

If you saw my post on Wednesday, I mentioned how we had our first official snow fall here in Chicago. Too early!

Fortunately, it melted off right away. Either way, Winter in Chicago is coming whether we like it or not. It will be interesting how this Winter will pan out.

I was pretty grumpy when Summer left us because it was SO short and I didn’t take Fall very well.

Our winters are pretty long so I need to put myself in a positive frame of mind if I want to get through it. Otherwise I will have a hard time dealing with it.

And now that my kiddo is SO active, I am REALLY dreading winter. I got all her winter gear ready to go because I am not about to keep her at home always, it just won’t be possible, she’s a ball of energy and really needs to let it out! I am a little paranoid of the cold when it comes to her. I hear on one end that it’s actually a GOOD thing to get kids out in the cold because it helps build their immunity. Regardless, I am still pretty anxious if I am over dressing her or under dressing her, is she going to sweat or is she going to freeze?

Winters in Chicago though is pretty magical, I have to admit. We still have soooooo many events that take place and I will be sure to share them with you in future posts!

So I thought I’d make a general list of the great things about Winters in Chicago. We already know the not so great things.

Winters

1. Tourist season is down-I don’t blame outsiders for not wanting to venture Chicago as much as they do in the summer. I get it, it’s cold. But for us locals this is great because it’s just easier to navigate the city when it comes to going to museums, restaurants, nightlife and so forth. The holidays are excluded from this because we get a lot of suburbanites coming into the city for shopping, the Christmas Parade, and so forth. Other than that, traffic is down and parking is easier.

2. Indoor activities: We have great museums and an aquarium that are frequented in the summer, you should see the lines! But for some reason I can’t get myself indoors to these places in the summer months, I want to take full advantage of the beaches and the warm weather.  Navy Pier is too chilly to spend time outdoors but they do a huge Winter Wonderland for the kids in the winter indoors that’s just so magical. Winter allows you to take advantage of these activities where you can stay warm and enjoy venturing the city at the same time that you typically won’t because you want to bask in the outdoors as much as possible during the summer.

3. Ice Skating Rinks: And for those who do love the outdoors, there are outdoor skating rinks that are enjoyed by everyone. Grab some hot chocolate to warm up and get some exercise while having fun. Even strolling through our parks is still possible if you don’t mind the cold much.

4. Live music/venues: Something about watching a live Blues or Jazz set during the Winter months with a cocktail in your hand seems so much better during the Winter. Don’t ask me what it is. Maybe because live music in these categories warms your soul so much that you just simply forget it’s winter.

5. Home Gatherings: I think this is a great time of year because lot of people do get togethers at each other’s places. Sometimes in the summer many people are on vacation or are super busy.  Winter in Chicago allows for a potluck or a wine and cheese party in the comforts of your home. Oh and ugly sweater parties! Gotta love those.

The city is fast paced and there is a lot of hustle and bustle going on. I think Winter allows the city to “slow down” a bit. There is just this peace and serenity that takes over the city when cold weather comes around. We won’t be able to stop Mother Nature so we might as well make the most of it.

It IS beautiful. I think the snow when it is fresh, really covers up the city real pretty. I have to keep the positive things about Chicago winters in mind or I will lose my mind otherwise 🙂

  2. The truth is, I’m a big baby about the cold. But I think I would get over it to visit Chicago. If I had a little one I know I would be like you, worried if they were too cold or too warm. But all those activities, and the snow, it sounds magical. Here’s to a great winter!

I am too. She is a little older this year so I told my husband we GOTTA plan some activities. She is so energetic it’s hard to contain her at home lol. Plus we will go nuts if we don’t get out there. Thanks!
