An Inside Look At The Life Of A Working City Mom.

Hi everyone! Did ‘ya miss me? I sure missed you all!

Boy, I had such a long week last week, and just trying to also get through this crazy weather we have been having here in Chicago. It was -15 one day, and then 40’s with tons of rain the next. January and February are my least favorite months ever!

As I have mentioned in my blog here and here , I work outside the home full-time. Here is an insight of what my typical day as a working city mom is like:

6:40am-7:30am: After snoozing the alarm clock a couple times, I wake up and start getting ready for work. Get dressed, turn the coffee maker on, pop in my breakfast in the microwave and take off, coffee in one hand, purse/bag/breakfast in the other. Luckily for me, I have family rotating to take care of the kiddo so no need to wake her up.

8:00am-4:30pm: Work. I may take a lunch at noon or I may eat at my desk, depends how the day is going. Sometimes I step out for Panera or Chipotle or sometimes I bring lunch from home if I have leftovers.

4:30pm-5:00pm: Leave work and do the reverse suburbs-to-city- 12 mile commute which can take from 45 minutes to an hour.

5:30pm-6:00pm: Home. Where I am greeted by my toddler at the door. I scoop her up and I go change into more comfy clothes.

6:00pm-7:30: Prepare and give kiddo’s dinner. Most of the time I do batch cooking over the weekend. I make a lot of pasta bakes such as this one or something else that is quick and easy to prepare such as this. I try to eat around the same time too while I sit with her.

7:30pm-8:00pm: Throw in some laundry as needed. Bath time for the kiddo, especially after all the mess she makes feeding herself.

8:00pm-9:00pm: Load dishes in the washer from the whole day, which seems to be all. the. freakin. time.

9:00pm-10:00pm: Lately my kiddo has been falling asleep late. Sometimes it’s not even until 11:00pm. Give her a bottle and she falls asleep one way or the other.

As I mentioned before, weekends are reserved for chores around the house like laundry, organizing, etc and lots of cooking since I rarely have time during the week. I may step out in my neighborhood to do some grocery shopping, especially during the warmer months where I get to head up the street to the farmer’s market. Sometimes, I might pick up a pizza next door. Saturday nights are my favorite, because I get to blog after the kiddo goes to sleep, and I don’t have to work the next day.

Of course when spring/summer rolls around,we spend more times outdoors, so the laundry and some of the dishes are put off 🙂

So what is your typical routine like? Do tell!

  1. You have very busy days! I’m impressed that you can fit it all in AND keep up with your blog. You go girl!

  2. I also try to do batch cooking over the weekend so I don’t have to worry about it during the week. My typical day is pretty similar to yours, but there’s a huge black box between 10pm after the kids are in bed and 1 am where I just sit in front of the computer or watch Netflix!

I usually crash after she does, but weekends I have that huge black box too, best feeling ever!

  3. I also work outside of the home full-time, and I have a bit of a commute. I usually wake around 5 a.m. to squeeze in some exercise – either at our corporate gym or a local yoga studio. My husband and I switch off on drop-offs. We have 3 kids – elementary and preschool. I’m usually in the office until about 5 p.m. Somedays I get to work from home. Love that! And the evenings are filled with kid activities and homework – and of course dinner and getting ready for the next day. I try to get to bed by 9:30 p.m. given my early wake-up call. I love the weekends for sleeping in – which is 7 a.m. for me – and then we do everything we can to enjoy family, activities and get organized for the week ahead. Stopping by from SITS!

Oh you are so good! I need to get back into an exercise routine! I have yet to find a job where I can work from home, but being in the medical field they are far and few between.

  4. Yes, this very much looks like my daily life except my both my kids go to bed at 8 now which is awesome. I get some nice computer and relaxation time with my husband! Visiting from Sharefest!

  5. My life is pretty much the same as yours, only 20 years later. I’ve worked for 35 years now and my kids are mostly grown, so at least I don’t have to give them baths anymore – ha! My advice – take it a little easier and enjoy a little time for yourself. Kids grow up so fast and no one ever died from a messy house. #SITSSharefest
