10 Ways Living in Chicago Can Spoil You For Life.

Sometimes I have to admit, it would be nice to have a huge backyard where you can chill and grill in the summertime while the kids play on their swingsets in the suburbs.

But these feelings are pretty short lived. I love living in Chicago. I really do. It comes with challenges, but living in Chicago has definitely spoiled me. I don’t know if this feeling of wanting to have an urban lifestyle will ever leave me.

I was inspired by an article that talks about how living in Chicago can spoil you for life. I will get to that. In the meantime, I thought I’d share some of my personal reasons why living in Chicago can spoil you for life.

10 Ways Living in Chicago Can Spoil You For Life (in no particular order):

1. Restaurants and eateries galore.

The restaurant and food scene out here is amaaaaazing. There are so many options ranging from Ethiopian to Italian to Polish and everything in between. It’s a great way to get a taste of different cultures.

2. The Lakefront.

With Lake Michigan at our doorsteps, it is enjoyed by all walks of life, young and old, your dog walkers, stroller mamas, cyclists, and runners. The path along the lake can be used to enjoy the lakefront all throughout the city. And when summer rolls around you can find people jet skiing, sailing, boating, and even fishing.

3. Nightlife and Entertainment.

Young and old, there is something for everyone, whether it’s enjoying a world renowned DJ that is in town, that live musician at a jazz club, or a dive bar with a jukebox where everyone knows your name. You can catch a Broadway show or a play in the many theaters sprinkled throughout the city.

4. Festivals

There are always festivals going on here. Always. Even a few in the wintertime. They feature live music, food, art, you name it.

5. Beaches

Although these can really only be used during the summertime, the fact that we have beaches that are just a hop, skip and away makes Chicagoans really appreciate the Summers here. Where else can you have a beach scene on one side and the city skyline on the other?

6. The Parks.

Many of us may not have backyards, but we have an abundant amount of green space with our nearby parks and great access to playgrounds for the kids, all free to use. People barbecue, have picnics, play soccer, throw frisbees around, you name it.

7. Sustainable Neighborhoods That Let You Walk Everywhere.

This is probably where I am the most spoiled. Many of the neighborhoods, such as mine, have banks, pharmacies, grocery stores, shops, dry cleaners, take-out, post offices, and coffee shops all close by, making it really easy to run your errands on foot, and a great way to get your exercise in!

8. You Always Feel Like You Are On Vacation.

Chicago is a touristy town that has great spots to check out such as Millenium Park, Navy Pier, and Michigan Ave. (hello shopping!) to name a few. We have world class hotels and us locals have been known to do staycation sometimes  for celebrations 🙂

9.We Have Culture.

From concerts to museums to dance companies, we have plenty of ways to get our sophistication on.

10. P ublic Transportation.

No car? No problem-you can get from point A to point B anytime with busses, the El, the Metra, and cabs.

I really enjoyed writing this post which I was gratefully inspired from this list of 27 reasons why Chicago Will Spoil You For Life.  The reasons they present at aroundme.com are also on point on how living in Chicago can spoil you for life.

  1. I definitely love the culture that the city has to offer. And Chicago in the summertime is the best!

Agree! I heard Oprah once said that if we had great weather year ’round everyone would want to live here, not in California-I believe it!

  2. Thank you so much for giving me several more reasons to fall in love with my new home city! Coming from San Diego I have so muh family giving me grief about weather differences, beach life and dining. It’s on with this new ammunition and I can’t wait to experience my first summer alongside Lake Michigan!

  3. Great post, Deanna! I was just talking to a couple transplants yesterday who haven’t experienced a Chicago winter yet and are super nervous for it. I told them that the winters are why Chicagoans appreciate the summer more than anyone! Chicago in the summertime is just magical. Now I have tons more reasons to give people to love the city. <3

Hi Alyssa! Sorry, been on a blogging hiatus, and just saw this. Well I hope they handled it well,as this was one of the mildest winters we have seen in a long time! Although it snowed in April which was so unexpected, or was it? It’s Chicago after all! We have a lot of indoor entertainment at least when the weather gets us down. So it’s an overall great city to be in!
